Is 2025 the year when AI, AR, and VR finally go mainstream in the world of HR & L&D?
As you kickstart 2025, and begin to consider how to integrate AI, AR and VR into your HR and L&D model, you might be wondering:
How do we ensure these new digital tools augment our human experience rather than replace it?
The truth is, whilst there is a huge variety of new technology solutions flooding the HR and Learning technology market, automating and augmenting the employee journey requires careful consideration.
So in this month’s blog, we are delighted to be diving into one of our all-time favourite topics:
Employee Experience Design (EXD)

Grab a cuppa, sit back and relax as we share our top tips and insights on how you build a digitally enabled workforce where employees feel heard, supported and empowered to do their best work.
Ready to get started?...
Let's dive right on in!
✌️
So, what is Employee Experience Design, and why does it matter?
Employee Experience Design (EXD) is a strategic approach that focuses on shaping every touchpoint of an employee’s journey within an organisation - from recruitment to offboarding.
It encompasses physical workspace, digital tools, cultural norms, policies, and day-to-day interactions that influence an employee’s perception and engagement.
Unlike traditional HR functions that mainly focus on policies and compliance, EXD is a holistic, human-centred approach aimed at improving how employees feel, work, and grow within the organisation.
According to Gartner, companies that prioritise employee experience design are 25% more profitable than those that don't.
But as much as EX Design has an obvious commercial benefit, the concept of employee experience design is fundamentally about humanising the experience of work.
It's about more than just perks and ping-pong tables; it's about intentionally shaping every touchpoint in the employee journey, from initial job application to exit interview (and beyond!).
At nxGeno, we believe that intentional experience design is the secret to unlocking a digitally enabled workforce and future-proofing your HR and L&D function. It’s about creating experiences that don’t just support employees but actively engage and empower them in a digital-first world.
When we think about what it takes to build impactful digital HR and Learning experiences, we break the design process down into three key areas:

Attention
In the first area, the objective of the design process is to captivate the employee’s attention. It's about creating innovative, interactive and visually engaging content that instantly communicates value, cuts through the noise and generates curiosity and buy-in right from the start.
Engagement
The second area focuses on building engagement and emotional connection. Here, we recommend using storytelling techniques aligned with your company’s mission, values, and goals to bring your HR and Learning technology products to life and elevate their impact
Experience
This final area is where the magic happens as the experience design process converges. Making intentional design decisions in areas 1 and 2 help create a holistic experience that sparks human connection and builds sustained engagement over a longer period.
So, why does all this matter?
In 2025, employee experience is deemed to be the ultimate competitive advantage.
In a world where top talent has endless options, a positive EXD is what attracts, retains, and motivates the best people.
Happy, engaged employees are more productive, more innovative, and more likely to stay with your company for the long haul.
They're also your number one brand ambassadors when it comes to getting the message out there about being a great place to work.
Elevating Employee Experience by integrating HR Tech innovation.
The integration of AI, AR, and VR capability in HR & L&D tech products offers new opportunities to personalise and enhance the employee experience on a scale we haven't seen before.
Global healthcare giant, Bupa, connects and engages their global workforce through smart EXD thinking. Leveraging WorkVivo, a cloud-based employee experience platform, Bupa connects their 83,000 global workforce, providing crucial touch points for front line and desk workers to voice their perspectives, collaborate together and share experiences that embed their organisational and cultural values - on one centralised platform.
This is a great example of maximising employee experience design to embrace a digitally enabled workforce, regardless of organisational size or geography.
As an HR or Learning leader in 2025, you are uniquely empowered to be the architect of new experiences in your organisation.
With the right tools, and the right approach you can design an employee journey that is more engaging, personalised, and impactful than ever before. AI, AR, and VR are no longer just emerging trends they are tangible solutions that can transform how your people onboard, learn, and grow:
AI-powered onboarding:
Imagine new hires receiving personalised onboarding plans tailored to their specific roles and learning styles. AI can automate administrative tasks, finally freeing up HR to focus on building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.
AR-enhanced training:
AR can bring learning to life with interactive simulations and real-time feedback. Imagine a sales team practicing their pitches in a virtual, augmented environment, receiving AI-powered coaching on their delivery.
VR for leadership development:
VR can create immersive experiences that help leaders develop empathy, improve communication skills, and practice making difficult decisions in a safe environment.
But as attractive as these prospects might be, it's crucial to remember that great digital EXD is fundamentally about having a positive impact on your people and culture.
Creating the right balance between automation and human interaction is critical.

Here are our top tips for getting digital EX Design right:
Prioritise human connection: Don't let fancy new technology detract from or replace the meaningful face-to-face interactions and team-building activities that ignite your company culture. Instead, find innovative and novel ways to integrate it when it can add the most value.
Focus on personalisation: Use technology to bridge the experience gap, shaping experiences to individual needs and preferences.
Ensure accessibility: Empower employees with access and training to the technology and resources they need.
Gather feedback: Regularly solicit feedback from employees to understand their needs and identify areas for improvement.
Stay ethical: Be mindful of data privacy and ensure technology is used responsibly.
